Making Your Website Accessible

An Open Door...

What does it mean for a website to be accessible? Accessibility relates to the Ethos of human experience - the credibility and integrity that comes from an easy-to-use web presence.

"A user who may be impaired in any area (visual or physical) should still have easy access to your website."

Your information is separate from your website. Your website is simply a layer on top of your content that allows convenient access from a standard web browser or other tool.

What if you designed a beautiful website that exceeded user expectation for functionality and usefulness, but only 50% of your potential customers could view it? Sadly, many websites to this day fall under this paradigm. They were designed with excellence, but unfortunately rely on older or obscure technologies that limit the accessibility of their information. Whether it's poor HTML, bad code, or poor planning, each shortcoming can be overcome by paying attention to detail.

Spectrum 5 Media recognizes that a wide variety of users don't fall under the 'Superman' category - 20/20 vision, perfect motor skills, and many other things we can take for granted. A user who may be impaired in any area should still have easy access to your website. Many details that we consider include:

  • Large, easy to read text
  • Easily located and clickable links
  • Proper use of contrast and color to visually separate content
  • Modular Design that stays consistent to ease regular use
  • Content that is completely available to the visually impaired
  • 100% Section 508 Compatibility for Accessibility

Maintaining Accessibility should have no impact on the other features of your web presence - it should still be attractive and useful. Combining the three are not mutually exclusive options.
